Since 1967 Queens Legal Services Corporation (QLS) has been providing free legal help in a variety of civil cases to Queens residents who would otherwise be unable to afford counsel. With our staff of attorneys, paralegals, and support staff, Queens Legal Services provides legal information, advice, and representation, consistent with governing regulations and our limited resources. We serve individuals, families and groups. We provide community education programs and engage in permissible legislative and administrative advocacy.
Our priorities are in the following areas:
Housing: evictions, lockouts, denial of essential services, overcharges, discrimination, and loss of housing subsidies.
Government Benefits Law: public assistance, Medicaid, Food Stamps, Social Security, SSI, and Unemployment Insurance Benefits.
Consumer Law: debt collection, including collection abuses, student loans involving trade schools, utility cutoff, and debt consolidation schemes.
Family Law: domestic violence and related divorce, custody, visitation and support proceedings, foster care, abuse, and neglect proceedings. We handle the special domestic violence-related problems of people who lack immigration status.
Foreclosure Prevention: foreclosures and predatory lending.
Education: Title I, special education matters, suspension and expulsion, and discrimination.
Citizenship: assistance to those who want to become U.S. Citizens.
